Overview of #NEXTGENSUMMIT

Next Generation Summit (NEXTGEN) was established in May, 2014 and registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission the same year. With a UN SDGs Post-2015 status, NEXTGEN is a non-governmental organization that seeks to pursue mainstreaming of youth. Through strategic partnership with the Network and Social Mobilization (NSM) department of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development (FMoYSD), we have presence in all states of the federation and have local and international affiliations with frontline development institutions such as the World Bank Youth Forum, Commonwealth Youth Council, National Youth Council of Nigeria, Nigeria Economic Summit Group, AU Youth Forum and the UN Office of Youth.

#NextGenSummit is fast-emerging and growing as a frontline non-governmental organization that promote and protect the interest, welfare and aspirations of adolescents and youth and those in the category of underserved. The impetus for the establishment and existence of NEXTGEN is the provision of social services especially to youth and other communities and the desire to contribute to national development.

NEXTGENSUMMIT seeks to contribute to the overall health, education and economic empowerment of young Nigerians and the promotion of positive behavioral standard of young people for stable health and mental well-being, proper education and knowledge capacity that enhance national development. NEXTGEN reviewed and adopted a new strategic plan redefining its vision, mission, value statements, goal and strategic objectives.

Thematic Areas

Education

The absence of inclusive and equitable quality education is presently the most devastating aspect of the legacy of poor countries with continuous fall of school enrolment rates and sharp rise in the number of out of school children. As the challenge exacerbates given Covid-19, exploring options for reforms will traverse working with partners, policy makers, stakeholders and parents. Next Generation Summit has an enduring commitment to help poor communities join the knowledge economy by working with its partners to help close gaps by sustaining practices that enhance enrolment rates and improve learning outcomes.

Disaster & Humanitarian Emergencies

Disasters and emergencies are sudden occurrences, and when it happens it leaves its victims in dire situation. Next Generation Summit speedily respond to humanitarian emergencies by mobilizing resources through the instrumentality of fundraising, aid-funding and, relief materials from donors and partners. Critical to the success of our effort is the role of media. They provide coverage and help with broadcast that make people see our work across mediums and countries. This way support comes from far and near.  To ensure no victim is left out of receiving support during emergencies, we work with community based organizations and local council authorities.

Maternal & Infant Health

We share in the pride of joining partners across the country in pushing the frontiers of universal access to primary health care for children and mothers. As the health care system in far-to-reach communities exacerbate due to Covid-19, it became apparent that the challenge of maternal and infant mortality requires collective action. Our effort in this regard is to ensure that we address the most pressing need of young people, women and children alike across communities with high incidence of neonatal, maternal and infant mortality rates.

People in Vulnerable Situation: Elderly, PLWHAs, PLWDs & OVCs

People in vulnerable situation or those in weak state of health including the elderly, people living with HIV/AIDs, people living with disabilities and orphaned children should be equal partakers of the provisions of health systems irrespective of their economic status. We are helping in the task of aggregating figures of those in this situation. We are doing this to have them access healthcare and other relief materials as easy as it can get. We will sustain this through partnerships and help prepare the grounds for robust health plans that situates these category of people at the heart of health care delivery.

Gender

On our part as an organization working to break down barriers of status, we are bringing skills, expertise and resources to bear in finding enduring solutions to the age-long history of gender bias and stereotypes against the Girl Child. We are working hard to see every girl enjoy equal opportunities and dignity. We work to amplify their voices in spheres of political participation, education, employment, health and other areas that make them equal contributors to growth.

Environment & Climate

There is growing concern across the world about our environment which is gradually sliding into a devastating state of barrenness owing to effects of climate change. Being on the vanguard of present day struggle to make our environment liveable and sustainable for the present and future generations is no mean feat. We are joining effort with community based organizations to sensitize indigent people about the changing climate. We are also working to increase change agents who would expand our scope on climate action.

ENDING POVERTY Through Employment & Employability Skills

One of the biggest dilemma facing the Next Generation is POVERTY. And the delivery of broad-based economic policies peculiar to poor countries under the grip of poverty seem to change conditions of young people affected marginally. Our work entails shaping public policy and promotion of reforms that are supportive of pro-poor growth. We do this by identifying linkages that must be built to drive results such as human capital development, inclusive social protection programs. We also work in areas that are considered growth enablers including enabling business environment, investment and trade policies, industrialization, infrastructure and factors that would catalyze job creation. To us, Ending Poverty means “Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for the Next Generation as the real enablers” – SDGs 8.
